Staffing infrastructure that held at pandemic scale

A real-time clinician marketplace with AI matching and instant pay, scaled through the COVID staffing crisis to a roughly $1.5B annual revenue run-rate.

Shift fill time

Minutes, not hours

The challenge

Facilities depended on staffing agencies with high fees, slow response and little transparency, while their own float pools sat underused. Credentialing lived in spreadsheets, which was slow, error-prone and a compliance risk.

Then COVID hit. Facilities needed pre-credentialed clinicians at the door in hours, clinicians expected to be paid the same day, and the platform had to hold under sustained, extreme load while the health system was at breaking point.

The marketplace in motion — shifts posted, matched and filled in real time.

Our approach

A two-sided marketplace: facilities post per-diem, contract and float-pool shifts with real-time visibility and cost projections; clinicians browse, apply and upload credentials from a mobile app, and are paid the moment a shift ends.

An AI matching engine weighs specialty, certifications, proximity, ratings and availability to fill same-day shifts in minutes, prioritising a facility's own staff before cascading to the wider network.

Credentialing is automated end to end, with license verification, background-check integrations and expiry alerts. The platform runs on event-driven microservices with HIPAA-compliant data handling, built to scale horizontally under surge.

Outcomes

  • Average time to fill an open shift dropped from hours to minutes
  • Facilities report 15–20% savings on staffing costs
  • Ranked #1 in healthcare on the 2022 Inc. 5000; later merged with connectRN into a 500,000-clinician network
